The scope

Create a platform to manage and show a blockchain ecosystem. The platform allowed devices (SIM cards) to be created and connected through accounts to other devices or services, enabling automatic transactions.

This was a complex and rather unusual project. I was the sole UX / UI designer. I had a scarce briefing to work with, as this was a pilot project, more of a trial of what a new technology could accomplish.

I started with a slide-deck with a small layout for a dashboard and some lines of code, and from there, it was my job to understand how the ecosystem would work. This involved many meetings with the client, who was the mastermind behind the technology, to discuss and iterate the solution.

I started with UX prototypes and later on moved to the UI.

Creating a platform that illustrates a development milestone and making it go live. As the technology was being created along with the design, it had to keep up with the uncertainty of what could be done. This meant a lot of rework and some limitations on the finished product. Besides, designs were created following Vodafone’s guidelines but a framework was used for implementation - Thingworx, so the UI was not implemented as designed.

Anyway, a first draft for the platform came to life, and the client was ecstatic to witness the first account added through the new GUI. The platform allowed for accounts, services and devices to be added and connected with one another.

One thing I had to consider was the sheer amount of items that could be handled at once, hence the use of a table and the selection of all to allow operations in bulk. Task flow had to be consistent throughout the portal, so similar tasks from the second level page should prompt an overlay with different steps. I had the idea to add a bubble chart for the devices ecosystem, to create a more 'visual' representation of this universe.
